Rumors are nowadays that Steve won't let his employees plant easter eggs anymore. Awww! Everyone knows that "Cleverness means Friendliness" and a world without easter eggs is a sad day indeed.
NotEnoughSecrets is written in an effort to restore some of the secret-about-box spirit to MacOS X. The breakout game, popularized by dragging the text "secret about box" in MacOS 7.5, is now back and in Carbonized form.
To get this thing to work, we have the easy way, and the hard way. I know you want the easy way, which is why it's here first.
The easy way to install NotEnoughSecrets
From a terminal window, run secretmonitor. Make sure it is in the same folder as SecretAboutBox.app, or you'll get nowhere. Then, all you have to do is drag a selection of "secret about box" onto the desktop, making a clipping. This is best done by, oh, I dunno, typing "secret about box" in TextEdit, selecting it, and dragging it to the desktop.
What will appear next will amaze and amuse you! FAANtastic.
The hard way to install NotEnoughSecrets
Of course, the only problem with the easy way is that you have to go and get secretmonitor going before it actually works. To Paul and Eric, this was unacceptable so we (ok, pretty much Eric) devised a way on how to do it.
First, put SecretAboutBox.app and secretmonitor somewhere. Remember where you put them. Make a new file in your personal Library/Preferences folder called "loginwindow.plist". Make it say something like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist SYSTEM "file://localhost/System/Library/DTDs/PropertyList.dtd">
Of course, you should replace my saucy directory with your swanky directory inside the <string> tags.
Any other stuff
This being my first MacHack, I wanted to take up space by writing about how memorable it's been. Paul and I have spent wayyy too much time with each other, it's a wonder one of us hasn't killed the other by now. Sleep is not a luxury. It's a burden but a cure for irritability. And it reminds one to take showers and change clothes and stuff. Oh, and Paul's mom gives great cron jobs.
